The project They were, those people, a kind of solution is funded through European Union’s Creative Europe program.

Four support groups for migrants and refugees

The participants of educational training for migrants and refugees on integration practices established 4 support groups according to different fields of interest: for example – advocacy, education, sports etc. The groups have monthly meetings where they discuss issues and needs which are result of socially deprived living conditions. The group consists of migrants and refugees only, in order to achieve safe space and empowerment.

Football group for children

One of the groups is established to provide support to refugee children in Zagreb. This group is not just to provide football practice but trains children on teamwork, Croatian society and enables those children to spend their leisure time in a quality and structured way.

Legal support group

One of the groups is established to provide legal support and information to refugees and asylum seekers Zagreb to support them in accessing their rights. The legal group gathers volunteer lawyers and law students who provide legal support once a week in the Reception centre in Zagreb as well as support asylum seekers in preparing their asylum interviews and access their rights in the integration process.

Creative women's group

An existing women to women empowerment group gathering migrant and refugees women as well as local women and artists is supported to further develop their cultural and support activities. The group consists of women only, in order to achieve safe space and empowerment.

Domaćigosti Choir

Based on previous screening of good integration practices, one of the established groups is a migrant/refugee choir. The group has weekly two-hour meetings/rehearsals which include vocal exercises and training of songs from all parts of the world, chosen and arranged by choir members.

The idea of this support group is also to help the involved migrants and refugees with self-empowerment and inclusion into the society. Furthermore, this support group will include innovativeness, as it will be a first practice of this kind in Croatia.
