The exhibition My Life to Live presents works by four female artists whose artistic practices encompass both a wide range of media and innovative review of historical practices of contemporary art and film. Also, their artistic practices deal with the contradictions and principles of contemporary artistic and political representations as part of the modern global regime of spectacle dominated by images. The exhibition My Life to Live involves a broader set of issues related to identity, migration and representation. Wendelien van Oldenborgh in her film presents the actress Bete Mendes and Baile funk singer Deise Tigrona who each in their own way give meaning to the idea of a public voice. Together these women talk about the use of their voice and their positions in the public sphere, their different backgrounds and allow for the contradictions they each carry within themselves to surface. The selection of works by Vlasta Delimar includes a series of autobiographical portraits that have been made in different periods and which, in addition to reflecting personal history, investigate position of women bodies in public space. The City of Ladies by Zanny Begg is a video installation comprised of semi-randomly generated fragments of a film made in collaboration with young activists of migrant background and prominent feminists in Paris. The project is a collaboration between Zanny Begg and the Paris based Australian director Elise McLeod and is inspired by the fifteenth century proto-feminist novel of the same name by France’s first professional female writer Christine de Pizan.
